Belden Offers Industry First with SDI/HD Coaxial Cables          Sep  2008

Belden has designed SDI/HD Coaxial Cables with design features that make using compression connectors faster, easier and more secure.

With the proliferation of plasma and LCD screens, there is growing market demand for high resolution video in a host of applications, including:

• AV presentations and whiteboards for meetings and classroom training

• Projector presentation systems

• Teleconferencing

• Closed-circuit surveillance and security systems

• Video for home theaters

• Video pick-up in sports bars, casinos, racinos and other commercial venues

• High Resolution Surveillance Video

• SDI, video, and Broadband HDTV

• Broadband Internet Delivery

Concurrently, AV and security system integrators are increasingly selecting compression connectors, which can be problematic when used with traditional foil design coaxial cables. The foil can bunch up when inserted into compression connectors or, if the foil is left in place, foil “stringers” can result which can short to the cable’s center conductor.

The Belden Solution

Belden has designed its System Integrator Digital Coax cables especially for use with compression connectors. The cable design features a foil shield that is securely bonded to the jacket and is self-removing during preparation for connection, thus making installation easier and eliminating the risk of foil stringers and shorting. Belden

is the first cable manufacturer to offer system integrators this unique cable solution.

Available in Four Designs, Five Colors

The new Belden System Integrator Digital Coax cable line includes four products: 1355R and 1355P (RG-59/U Type), and 1356R and 1356P (RG-6/U Type).

All cables are sweep tested to 3GHz, and all guarantee -15dB Return Loss (RL) performance. The cable design includes a tinned copper braid shield (85 percent coverage) and bonded Duofoil® shield (100 percent coverage) for effective shielding

in higher frequency applications. The foil is placed over the braid and securely bonded to the jacket so it is self-removing during cable preparation.

The cables are available in five colors: Black, White, Red, Green and Blue.

Materials are sourced form a limited number of high quality reliable and competitive materials, inventory is maintained or sourced through short-lead times and supplier stock programs.

Thermoset and Thermoplastic materials are used for cable insulation.

To assure clean and accurate signals back to the control room, aluminum, copper, and bronze shields are applied to individual and groupings of cable.

An additional layer of protection of armor will be added depending o the applications. This includes Served Wire Armor (SWA) for physical protection where cut through resistance is necessary, and Interlock Armor (aluminum or galvanized) for mechanical and cable core protection.

Dekabon Moisture/Chemical Barrier is applied to provide chemical, crush and vapor resitsnace and protection against moisture. The addition of Dekabon ensures cable suitability for direct burial applications and abrasive backfilling. Paired with a drain wire, Dekabon also acts an electrostatic shield which provides protection against lighting.

Thermoset and thermoplastic jackets are used for first and second jackets within the cable. Jackets can be easily removed with a nylon ripcord for field stripback and terminations.

Maser UK and Alpha Wire agree when it comes to                   3 July 2006
Variable Frequency Drive Cables round is definitely better....

The new INDUSTRIAL SERIES - SERIES V Enhanced Design Variable
Frequency Drive (VFD) Cables,
designed by Alpha Wireare easy to install, aesthetically pleasing and built to combat the continuous dielectric stresses that
cause other cablesto fail.

The INDUSTRIAL SERIES - SERIES V Enhanced Design Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Cables have a round, symmetrical geometry that improves
cable performance and electrical characteristics and makes installation easier, more secure and air/water tight. Alpha Wire engineers designed the SERIES V Cables using non-hygroscopic filler materials to ensure a symmetrical profile and a corresponding roundness to the foil/braid shield to promote a fixed capacitance profile throughout the cable. While typical convoluted cables are difficult to work with,
Alpha’s SERIES V Cables fit easily into grommets offering superior cable-to-
electrical-junction/control box sealing. The result is a tighter, cleaner connection that is protected from dirt, dust, oil, water and pollutants and meets IP 67 and NEMA 6 installation standards.

Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES - SERIES V Enhanced Design Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Cables deliver optimum performance and durability in
the most challenging manufacturing environments. SERIES V Cables incorporate several critical design features that safeguard motors and system components, including
thermo set Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) insulation to help prevent meltdown
during corona discharge and voltage spikes, tightly-fitted shields to reduce
the probability of corona discharge and large insulation walls to reduce capacitance. Ideal for the most advanced AC drives, Alpha’s SERIES V Cables are acceptable for use with Allen-Bradley® ArmorStart Distributed Motor Controller Series with integrated variable frequency AC drives, manufactured by Rockwell Automation.

Alpha Wire’s SERIES V Cables are built with a state-of-the-art foil/braid shielding system and employ advanced XLPE insulation. Power conductors are insulated with
at least 0.1143mm. of XLPE. The result is a VFD cable that delivers unexcelled service
life for today’s sophisticated VFD drive systems. The new SERIES V VFD Cables
virtually eliminate downtime caused by premature cable failure. More importantly,
XLPE lowers capacitance and has improved electrical characteristics for optimum
signal transfer.

“The core of the new SERIES V VFD Cables remains the thermo set XLPE insulation,” explained Harry Quinn, Alpha Wire’s General Manager.   “Alpha Wire’s specially formulated XLPE insulated conductors improve performance by delivering
consistent pulsed width modulation (PWM) and provide excellent low capacitance propertiesthat ensure system performance. The cables will not degrade under heavy electrical load and increase system up-time by dispersing voltage spikes, harmonics,
corona discharges and power distortion. With an ease of installation and tight seal
that are only possible with a round geometry, these VFD cables are superior in every way to traditional, convoluted products.”

SERIES V unique shielding system helps contain EMC signals from device to device
by preventing extraneous noise currents from polluting either the external environment
in immediate proximity or other control circuits in common trays or conduits.

Harry Quinn also states that Alpha Wire’s INDUSTRIAL SERIES - Series
V
Enhanced Design VFD Cables “are built to specifically withstand the rigours of
the VFD environment.  Motors last longer, connections are sealed and components are protected. System up-time is maximised so that our customers can realise the full cost savings of variable speed drives.”

There has been wide acceptance of these new cables, which clearly reflects the industry's confidence in Alpha Wire's engineering capabilities and illustrates the need for this new generation of advanced-designed VFD cables.

Alpha Wire Industrial Series – Series V Enhanced Design Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Cables are now acceptable for use with Allen-Bradley® ArmorStart Distributed Motor Controller Series with integrated variable frequency AC drives manufactured by Rockwell Automation.  And are suitable for use with most manufacturers drives, including AA Electric, ABB, Baldor, Cutler-Hammer,
Fivestar Electric Motors, General Electric, Hitachi, Magnetek, Mitsubishi
Electric Automation, Motion Industries, Quality Drive Systems, Robicon, Siemens, Square D, Toshiba and TB Woods.

BeldenCDT raise the bar with video coax sweep testing to 4.5GHZ.                                                                                                  1 February 2006

First in the industry to perform higher frequency testing of its precision video coaxial cables, Belden CDT Electronics is now raising the bar to ensure cable signal integrity and reliability in HDTV/SDI transmissions with lower return loss (RL) at higher frequencies.

Sweep testing to higher frequencies is key

Sweep testing of the cable is the method used by cable manufacturers to test and verify the return loss characteristics of a cable or device across a range of frequencies. Good practice, according to industry standards, requires testing to the third harmonic of the operating frequency. For a serial, single cable in the 1080p format, that means testing to a frequency of 4.5 GHz. This 1080p format is expected to transmit serial digital video signals at 2.97 Gbits/s, requiring an operating frequency of 1.485 GHz.

This translates into a shorter wavelength and a greater chance that inconsistently manufactured cables will choke off the signal with a high level of return loss. This may be caused by even the slightest irregularity in the cable manufacturing process. A slightly bent shaft, bad bearing or uneven cable tension, for example, can cause reflection and affect the signal wavelength. Even flaws invisible to the naked eye can affect the signal and cause reflection. Therefore, utmost consistency and control in the manufacturing process is essential to the reliability of the cable's transmission at high frequencies and to minimize return loss. Until recently, the highest quality and most reliable HDTV/SDI cables on the market were sweep tested to 3 GHz, simply because no testing equipment existed to sweep test to higher frequencies. Now that the hardware and system has been developed to test video cables out to 4.5 MHz and even higher frequencies, these advances will ultimately enable broadcast and video equipment and system designers to "future proof" their HDTV/SDI cabling infrastructure and devices as they move forward in their efforts to bring 1080p progressive scan technology from vision to reality.

Belden CDT RoHS compliant.                                             6 December 2005

Over the past several years, increased attention has been placed upon the environmental impact of electrical and electronic products relative to their manufacture, use and disposal. To address some of these concerns, both voluntary and regulatory measures have been declared.

Already in place are four directives: The State of California’s Proposition 65, the European Union Waste Electrical an Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, the European Union End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive and the European Union Brominated Flame Retardant (BFR) Directive. A fifth piece of legislation, The Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, will be in force as of July 2006.

Belden CDT prides themselves on being an environmentally friendly and aware
producer and manufacturer. Many of their products are already compliant with these
noted regulations. Product disclosures are available upon request. Please check the
Belden CDT websites for product information to minimize the need for formal product
disclosures. Specific requests should be directed to Belden CDT Europe Customer
Service Department for consideration. Belden CDT Europe plans on being well
ahead of the government and standards regulations being currently set in the
European Union.
