Belden’s Digital Audio Cables, Available from Maser, Provides Optimal
Digital/Analog Performance and Installation Ease April 2009
Available from Maser Communications (UK), one of Belden’s leading Specialised Distributors and DNA Partners for the supply of Belden’s extensive range of cables to the Broadcast and Pro-Audio/Video markets in the UK and Ireland, the Belden Brilliance 1353A, a new Cat 5e digital audio single-pair cable, is ideal for use in professional and commercial audio applications.
The 1353A is especially valuable where small size, low weight, and high performance are required, and can be used anywhere a traditional analog or digital shielded pair might be employed, even where cabling may experience rough handling and harsh environmental conditions.
Other benefits if this new Cat 5e digital audio single-pair cable include the following:
1) Installation Efficiency
Many installers routinely use Category 5e or Category 6 cables for audio applications. But, until now if you wanted a single Cat 5e pair, it was necessary to take a four-pair cable and laboriously separate out a pair. The availability of this new ready-to-use jacketed single pair eliminates those inconvenient steps, saving installation time and improving installation efficiency.
2) Installable Performance
Belden’s patented Bonded-Pair technology provides maximum ruggedness and consistent electrical properties during and after installation. During installation, cables are typically pulled, bent, and even kinked. All of these actions can alter the dimensions and physical properties of the cable, degrading its electrical performance. However, the Bonded- Pair design attaches the two wires together (without glue!) for a uniform conductor-to conductor spacing. This helps the cable withstand the rigors of installation and maintain high performance.
3) Its Not Just for Digital Use, But Analog Too, and More
As a bonus, the 1353A Single-pair Digital Audio Cable can be used for analog applications as well as digital. As by nature of the products design, Belden Digital Audio Cables have a low capacitance due to their high impedance, making them excellent analog cables.
4) Outstanding Construction for Indoor/Outdoor Versatility
This innovative new product’s jacket is made of a rugged matte-finish PVC, yet the cable is still highly flexible and very round. Overall nominal cable diameter is 0.126 in. so the minimum installed bend radius is 1.26 in. The insulation on the pair is polyolefin. Operating temperature range for Belden 1353A is -20ºC to 60ºC and this cable complies with NEC/(UL) CMR (riser) and CEC/(UL) CMG fire ratings.

Alpha Wire Introduces Flexible Servo Cables February 2009
The new Series SF flexible servo cables from Alpha Wire offer increased flexibility for connecting power between the supply and servo motors, drives, and controllers. A flexible thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) jacket and PVC/nylon insulation make the cable suitable for flexing applications that require continuous movement. Superior flexibility and a tight bend radius of ten times the cable’s diameter also make installation easier.
The UL Listed cables meet the requirements of NFPA 79, allowing them to be used in industrial machinery applications such as machine tools, pick and place equipment, Cartesian and articulated motion control, and automated material handling systems.
To meet a range of power requirements, Series SF cables are available over an 18 to 8 AWG (0.96 to 8.5 mm2) conductor size range. The cables are available in both power and composite cable configurations. The Series SF power cable has four conductors for power and ground. The Series SF composite power cable adds two twisted pairs for use in braking control, temperature monitoring, or other control/monitoring uses. To provide excellent EMI protection in noisy electrical environments, the cables are shielded with a combination foil and tinned copper braid.
“The new Series SF gives users a more reliable and easy-to-use way to connect servo power,” said Mike Dugar, Senior Product Manager at Alpha Wire. “Users want more flexibility to make installation and startup faster, as well as increase long-term reliability. Cable sheaths to protect against aggressive chemicals February 2009
Dekoron is promoting a range of cables which can be furnished with ‘armour’, protecting them from harsh environments in the oil and gas industry.
The cable sheaths or ‘armour’ were designed to answer the problem of the permeability of existing plastic cable sheaths on the market due to humidity and aggressive chemicals.
“Penetration of these elements to the core of the cable compromise its overall lifetime performance. A conventional cable core protection against above mentioned elements is generally achieved by applying a lead sheath,” said the company.
Dekoron’s DEKABON’s cable constructions can be furnished with armouring options including served wire armour and interlock armour for additional physical protection.
The DEKABON technology is scalable and has been applied to instrument, control and thermocouple extension cables, says the company, also claiming that the technology has already been used by all major oil companies in their refineries and petrochemical facilities for over 25 years.
The technology is now available locally for the oil refining and petrochemical industry.

Belden Amoung Industry's First Cable Producers to Achieve FieldBus Foundation H 1 Cable Registration
Belden has recently announced that one of the company’s family of IndustrialTuff®DataBus® Cables for FOUNDATION™ fieldbus applications is among the industry’s first to achieve registration to the FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 Cable Test Specification. The Fieldbus Foundation is a global not-for-profit corporation consisting of leading process end users and automation companies.
FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 network is an all-digital, serial, two-way communications protocol that standardizes the interconnection of field devices. In November 2007, the Fieldbus Foundation’s new H1 Cable Test Specification was released to provide users with increased assurance that their industrial cabling infrastructure will provide robust and reliable physical layer performance.
Belden attained H1 registration for part number 3076F. This IndustrialTuff DataBus cable is a Type A 18 AWG stranded cable featuring a polyolefin insulation, Orange or Intrinsically Safe Blue PVC jacket, and 100 percent Beldfoil® shield with TC drain wire. For a cable to qualify, its manufacturers must conduct testing and submit successful test results based on the IEC 61158- 2:2003 standard for Type A cable, which includes (but is not limited to): impedance, capacitance unbalance, connector pin-outs, and attenuation. Registration signifies that the cable is suitable for any H1 fieldbus application, including high temperature and corrosive environments.
Commenting on the registration, Frank Koditek, Belden’s industrial line product manager, notes:“Belden strongly supports the FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 cable registration process because it gives our customers additional assurance that our Type A cables will deliver the quality and performance we promise. And, we credit the Fieldbus Foundation for its ongoing dedication to establishing measurable standards for physical layer requirements, since the cabling infrastructure is the cornerstone of reliable network performance.”

Banana Peel Projector Cables from Belden 30 October 2008
“Belden Projector Cables in a Banana Peel composite cable format, offer optimum flexibility and faster, easier installation break-outs for room-to-room Riser and Plenum Audio/Video applications.”
As the demand for sophisticated multimedia systems continues to grow, so too does the need for easier-to-install composite Audio/Video Projector cables. Installers are frequently called upon to run inter-room cabling to support highperformance A/V communications systems in schools, universities, municipal buildings, houses of worship and commercial office spaces.
To meet market demand, Belden introduces its Banana Peel® Projector Cables, an innovative design combining both audio and video cable components within a single composite cable. Designed for use in modern, high-tech buildings, Banana Peel Projector Cables are extremely flexible and easy to handle, enabling installers to save time and labor by running multiple A/V cables simultaneously from room-to-room, where similarly equipped wall plates are desired in each room.
Within the composite Projector Cables, the video components include six Belden RG-59 type 75 Ohm Precision Video Mini Coax Cables (Product No. 1281R-Riser and 1282P-Plenum) for analog and digital video. Audio components include two Belden 22 AWG Shielded Twisted Pair Audio Cables featuring aluminum foil-bonded jackets for easy
access to the positive, negative and shield drain wires.
Banana Peel Construction Means Faster Installation
Unlike conventional projector cables with overall jackets which are difficult to handle and add to the cables’ fuel load, the new Projector Cables feature Belden’s exclusive Banana Peel construction. In this design, individual cables are affixed to a central spline and are simply peeled off as needed for termination, making installation much faster and easier.
The Banana Peel construction also enables easier break-out of cables when the full bundle of eight components needs to be divided to run two smaller bundles to separate wall plates. Belden’s coax cables offer true 75 Ohm impedance, are sweep-tested, and come with Return Loss assurance. In addition, the elimination of the outer jacket reduces the cables’ total fuel load, making the Belden Projector Cables more suitable for in-wall and plenum use.
Belden: leadership in HD Technology 7 October 2008
Radio and television broadcasters are going all-digital. Digital formats are now being adopted by recording studios, video post-production and film production facilities, and many associated applications. The reason is clear – the digital format provides superior A/V performance. This digital transition is leading to a similar revolution in High Definition TV (HDTV).
In radio, TV or post-production applications, the key advantages include improved picture and sound quality as well as interactivity, including high-speed data and Internet access, pay-per-view services, simultaneous data/Internet access and personalized electronic news.
Although the digital format promises to revolutionize the A/V industry, it also poses a challenge when it comes to designing, choosing, and installing a new system.
Werner Eich, Market Manager Broadcast EMEA, says: “We are experiencing a digital revolution: broadcasters, television production studios and post-production enterprises are adopting high definition, serial digital imaging (HD/SDI) as their format of choice because of its superior performance and other advantages.”
Precision digital video is processed in real time and is extremely stable, which reduces equipment adjustments and allows copies or reproductions to retain the same quality as the original. Moreover, signal degradation is virtually eliminated and noise immunity is greatly improved. Digital technology not only promises to improve picture and sound quality, but also paves the way for interactive on-demand TV and other digital services.
Cable manufacturing consistency and quality are both key to achieve minimal return loss. Good practice requires testing to the third harmonic of the operating frequency. For serial, single cable 1080p, that means testing to a frequency of 4.5 GHz. This 1080p format is expected to transmit HD video signals at 3 Gb/s, requiring an operating frequency of 1.5 GHz. This translates to a shorter wavelength and a greater chance that inconsistently manufactured cables will choke off the signal with a high level of return loss. This may be caused by even the slightest irregularity in the cable manufacturing process. A slightly bent shaft, bad bearing or uneven cable tension, for example, can cause reflection and affect the signal wavelength. Therefore, utmost consistency and control in the manufacturing process is essential to the reliability of the cable’s signal transmission at high frequencies and to minimize return loss.
Increased sweep testing
Therefore, broadcast camera and video cables need to deliver top performance, whilst at the same time meeting extended international and European standards.
It is for this reason that Belden became the first cable manufacturer to increase its sweep testing from 3 GHz to 4.5 GHz for all coaxes designed for maximum bandwidth, minimum return loss and minimum attenuation loss. These cables already meet the very tight specifications for electrical properties and are ideally suited for both analog and digital video in broadcast, post-production and other critical video applications. In addition, Belden performs 100% sweep testing to 4.5 GHz on every reel of HD cable and provides certification to assure unequalled levels of cable signal integrity and reliability, with lower return loss (RL) at higher frequencies.
Werner Eich: “We are prepared for the future. As a pioneer and leader in cable technology, Belden has always taken a stringent approach to cable quality assurance. Rather than simply inspect and test random batches of cables after manufacturing, Belden begins its quality process in the product development and manufacturing stages”.
When an independent test laboratory took an in-depth look at the HD performance of the video coaxes used in TV studios, cables were tested for return loss, attenuation and maximum cable run on HD (1080i and 720p). In the end results all Belden products delivered performance values that exceeded the industry standards.
Belden continually introduces new developments and products for a range of different applications for the creation, production and delivery of entertainment content, including Mobile TV, IPTV and D-Cinema.
Belden Offers Industry First with SDI/HD Coaxial Cables Sep 2008
Belden has designed SDI/HD Coaxial Cables with design features that make using compression connectors faster, easier and more secure.
With the proliferation of plasma and LCD screens, there is growing market demand for high resolution video in a host of applications, including:
• AV presentations and whiteboards for meetings and classroom training
• Projector presentation systems
• Teleconferencing
• Closed-circuit surveillance and security systems
• Video for home theaters
• Video pick-up in sports bars, casinos, racinos and other commercial venues
• High Resolution Surveillance Video
• SDI, video, and Broadband HDTV
• Broadband Internet Delivery
Concurrently, AV and security system integrators are increasingly selecting compression connectors, which can be problematic when used with traditional foil design coaxial cables. The foil can bunch up when inserted into compression connectors or, if the foil is left in place, foil “stringers” can result which can short to the cable’s center conductor.
The Belden Solution
Belden has designed its System Integrator Digital Coax cables especially for use with compression connectors. The cable design features a foil shield that is securely bonded to the jacket and is self-removing during preparation for connection, thus making installation easier and eliminating the risk of foil stringers and shorting. Belden

Variable Frequency Drive Cables round is definitely better....
The new INDUSTRIAL SERIES - SERIES V Enhanced Design Variable
Frequency Drive (VFD) Cables, designed by Alpha Wireare easy to install, aesthetically pleasing and built to combat the continuous dielectric stresses that
cause other cablesto fail.
The INDUSTRIAL SERIES - SERIES V Enhanced Design Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Cables have a round, symmetrical geometry that improves
cable performance and electrical characteristics and makes installation easier, more secure and air/water tight. Alpha Wire engineers designed the SERIES V Cables using non-hygroscopic filler materials to ensure a symmetrical profile and
a corresponding roundness to the foil/braid shield to promote a fixed capacitance profile throughout the cable. While typical convoluted cables are difficult to work with,
Alpha’s SERIES V Cables fit easily into grommets offering superior cable-to-
electrical-junction/control box sealing. The result is a tighter, cleaner connection that is protected from dirt, dust, oil, water and pollutants and meets IP 67 and NEMA 6 installation standards.
Alpha Wire INDUSTRIAL SERIES - SERIES V Enhanced Design Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Cables deliver optimum performance and durability in
the most challenging manufacturing environments. SERIES V Cables incorporate several critical design features that safeguard motors and system components, including
thermo set Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) insulation to help prevent meltdown
during corona discharge and voltage spikes, tightly-fitted shields to reduce
the probability of corona discharge and large insulation walls to reduce capacitance. Ideal for the most advanced AC drives, Alpha’s SERIES V Cables are acceptable for use with Allen-Bradley® ArmorStart Distributed Motor Controller Series with integrated variable frequency AC drives, manufactured by Rockwell Automation.
Alpha Wire’s SERIES V Cables are built with a state-of-the-art foil/braid shielding system and employ advanced XLPE insulation. Power conductors are insulated with
at least 0.1143mm. of XLPE. The result is a VFD cable that delivers unexcelled service
life for today’s sophisticated VFD drive systems. The new SERIES V VFD Cables
virtually eliminate downtime caused by premature cable failure. More importantly,
XLPE lowers capacitance and has improved electrical characteristics for optimum
signal transfer.
“The core of the new SERIES V VFD Cables remains the thermo set XLPE insulation,” explained Harry Quinn, Alpha Wire’s General Manager. “Alpha Wire’s specially formulated XLPE insulated conductors improve performance by delivering
consistent pulsed width modulation (PWM) and provide excellent low capacitance propertiesthat ensure system performance. The cables will not degrade under heavy electrical load and increase system up-time by dispersing voltage spikes, harmonics,
corona discharges and power distortion. With an ease of installation and tight seal
that are only possible with a round geometry, these VFD cables are superior in every way to traditional, convoluted products.”
SERIES V unique shielding system helps contain EMC signals from device to device
by preventing extraneous noise currents from polluting either the external environment
in immediate proximity or other control circuits in common trays or conduits.
Harry Quinn also states that Alpha Wire’s INDUSTRIAL SERIES - Series
V Enhanced Design VFD Cables “are built to specifically withstand the rigours of
the VFD environment. Motors last longer, connections are sealed and components are protected. System up-time is maximised so that our customers can realise the full cost savings of variable speed drives.”
There has been wide acceptance of these new cables, which clearly reflects the industry's confidence in Alpha Wire's engineering capabilities and illustrates the need for this new generation of advanced-designed VFD cables.
Alpha Wire Industrial Series – Series V Enhanced Design Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Cables are now acceptable for use with |
